Nationalmuseum is a governemental authority and Sweden’s leading museum of art and design. We are c. 150 employees. Our collections consist of older paintings, sculpture, drawings and graphics as well as arts and crafts and design from antiquity to the present day. We are also responsible for the art of portraiture to this day through the State Portrait Collection. The collections are shown on Blasieholmen, Stockholm and in another c. 20 places, including Läckö Castle and Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum. Nationalmuseum conducts a successful exhibition production, extensive activities with programs, research, and publication as well as outgoing loans.

The Nationalmuseum, Sweden’s largest and most distinguished art institution, possesses a world class collection of about 500 000 artworks on paper, ranging from Old Master Drawings to contemporary photography. The core holdings of the collection were assembled by Count Carl Gustaf Tessin (1696–1770), a diplomat and one of the great art collectors of his day. This included works by artists such as Rafael, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Rembrandt and French Rococo masters.

The employment is a full-time, permanent position from 14th of September, or by agreement. 

Nationalmuseum is looking for a storage keeper with interest of managing and develop the assignment as a storage keeper of prints and drawings collection and photography in the art handling unit. As a storage keeper you will play a key role in the preservation and displaying the museum’s collections. You will be part of a team of storage keepers, packing technicians and exhibition technicians, managed by the Head of the Unit.

The art handling unit is responsible for the implementation of storage keeping, art handling and risk management according to best practice in collection management, as also mounting of objects when planning and installing exhibitions. The unit is part of the Department Preservation and Photography, which also includes Conservation Unit and Photo studio.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for the management of the designated storage and implementation of measures according to best practice in collection management.
  • Responsible for the traceability of art objects in the storage by registration, ID-photography and inventory of objects in the collection database.
  • To contribute with planning and participate in exhibition work, handling of loans and new acquisitions including logistics.
  • Take part in streamlining workflows and applying sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of working and optimising the storage premises. 
  • Provide cost and budget estimates in relation to the area of responsibility.
  • Keep updated of new practices, developments and discussions within the area of responsibility.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant college or university education or other equivalent education
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience of working in the museum storage or from another museum activity that is considered equivalent
  • Experience of working with collection management database MuseumPlus, or equivalent
  • Good language skills in Swedish or English in both speech and writing

Merits:

  • Good knowledge of fine art and design, cultural studies or equivalent

Profile:

We assume that you will have very good organizational abilities, are responsible, and can work both independently and in close collaboration with others. As a person, you are proactive, solution-oriented, responsive, used to being flexible and working to deadlines. You have good communication skills both in speech and writing.

The duties are physically demanding with daily heavy lifting. Important to have a good physique, understanding of ergonomics and maintenance of continuous training to avoid injuries. Work in another location may occur, which means travel and overnight stays.
